In 1971, drillers accidentally tapped into a massive cavern of natural gas that caused the ground around the drill spot to collapse. To avoid spreading the gas into the surrounding environment, the cavern was ignited (under the assumption that the fire would burn off the gas in a matter of days). The crater has been burning ever since.
Seeing this is on my bucket list.
I hope you can actually get that close to it, and its not all cordoned off.
