Art Smith is regarded as one of the most influential modernist jewelry designers of the 20th century. His pieces are known for their unconventional, yet aesthetically pleasing shapes that flawlessly contour the body. His materials of choice included gold, silver, copper, and various stones. In 1946, Smith opened his first shop in Greenwich Village making his work available to the public. One of Smith’s primary inspirations was jazz music, which perhaps accounts for the rhythmic designs of many of his pieces. African motifs also predominantly influenced his work. After his death in 1982, his designs gained worldwide recognition in the art and fashion communities.
