Heading South? Make a point to check out Cadillac Ranch. Installed in 1974 by founding members of the San Francisco-based art group known as the “Ant Farm”, Cadillac Ranch has become a popular roadside attraction to tourists and graffiti artists alike. Ten of the original eleven cars, perfectly aligned but stripped down to their frames, remain buried tail-side up in the dirt along Interstate 40 in Amarillo, Texas. The Cadillacs were relocated once from their original location along Route 66 in 1997 but otherwise the installation remains in its original state. The only thing changing is the paint covering them. Visitors and local artists are permitted to create their own masterpieces on the cars with spray paint (maybe that’s why you can smell Cadillac Ranch from a mile away).
